Southern-Style Salmon Cakes with Creamy Remoulade Sauce

As a kid, this recipe was a Friday night staple, alongside fried potatoes and onions. You can pair this with grits or a side of collard greens and cornbread. This recipe is freezer-friendly and perfect for meal prep! Freeze cooked salmon cakes in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag for up to 3 months.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (5-6 oz each) of no-salt-added salmon, drained and flaked

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs (low-sodium or homemade)

  • 2 tbsp plain sour cream

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

  • 1/4 cup green onions, chopped

  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for pan-frying)

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine flaked salmon, egg, breadcrumbs, sour cream, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, parsley, and green onions. Mix until evenly combined.

  2. Shape the mixture into patties. Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for 20 minutes. This helps them hold together during cooking.

  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together sour cream, dill, lemon zest, lemon juice, and garlic powder.

  2. Serve chilled alongside the salmon patties.
